With 40 years in engineering, Roy Grimes has achieved a multitude of qualifications, including certificates in Supervisory Studies and Production Control, a Master of Sciences Diploma in Manufacturing and a City & Guilds Mechanical Engineering qualification.

In recent years, Roy has seen the UK manufacturing industry struggle to compete with its cheaper Far East competitors. He believes that Dearson’s roots in traditional British engineering have provided a solid foundation as they continue to evolve – for instance, their high quality, efficient service stems from when he – and others his age – began in engineering and piecework demanded a quick turnover.

“Having to complete a high number of orders to get a bonus instilled a sense of urgency and pride in high quality work into us,” he explains. “It meant that we – I and the other directors of my generation – were left with the knowledge that fast production without compromising on quality benefits all.”

Years of experience on the shop floor has left Roy and his fellow directors with the skills and expertise required to consult, design, prototype and manufacture precision tooling from start to finish. “I have worked on thousands of projects that required in-depth knowledge about the materials and processes involved,” he comments. “Dearson is not about quick turnover and mass production. It is about precision engineering, innovative design and problem solving – something that the British manufacturing industry is famous for.”

Roy is also passionate about the ecological and environmental challenges facing engineering. “Only when steady environmental legislation and procedures have been set out and thoroughly explained to everyone, can industries such as ours get fully behind the initiatives,” he says. “Dearson is firmly committed to backing local and national directives.”
